Social Media Day is upon us; and as such, we thought we’d take a look at how much our digital world has changed over the past year.

From Facebook’s rebrand to Instagram trialling removing post likes; we delve into what exactly has changed over the past 12 months.

Facebook Rebrand

Earlier this year, Mark Zuckerberg outlaid plans for a Facebook rebrand with the emphasis being on user privacy. For years Facebook has been at the forefront of social media and one of the trendsetting websites in the social media sphere. As Facebook shifts towards a sleeker all white layout; Zuckerberg states private interactions, encryption, reduced permanence, safety, interoperability and secure data storage to be at the centre of this company shift. Whilst Zuckerberg himself admits Facebook doesn’t have the best reputation when it comes to privacy; time will only tell as to how the rebrand will impact users and their data.

WhatsApp Security Breach

One of the biggest stories in our internet-based world of recent times is the WhatsApp security breach. A little over a month ago it was reported that a vulnerability in the chat apps make up meant that hackers could potentially gain access to users’ phones. Supposedly infiltrated by an Israeli group who have developed malware to spy on phones; WhatsApp moved quickly to determine and fix the vulnerability and deliver an update to protect users. There could be more to this story yet with law enforcement involved.

Instagram – hiding likes, shopping and memories

Instagram has been a busy bee this past year. Having surpassed one billion users, the Facebook-owned platform continues to seek innovations to allow its growth to continue. This past year, Instagram began to trial the controversial hiding of post likes; with some commenters in the media expressing concern for young people’s mental health because of the decision. Elsewhere they developed a shopping feature to enable users to shop from business profiles direct within the app and replicated Facebook’s daily memories feature so you can reminisce about a salad you ate three years ago.

Twitter

Lastly, not to leave out everyone’s favourite 280 character-based platform; Twitter delivered the option to quote tweets with images and GIF’s and timeline customisation from purely chronological to those top tweets you shouldn’t miss.

In conclusion, with all this and more happening in the past year alone; who knows what will happen by Social Media Day 2020. We can’t wait to find out!
